Children develop behaviors which they learn from their life experiences which may be maladaptive and not appropriate to their current age and social development. Behavior modification is a structured teaching approach focused on the child’s behaviors to be extinguished and establishing new behaviors to be reinforced. Behavior modification is used in the behavioral management of children. For example, a “time out” is behavior modification as is a behavior chart, and giving a child a reward for a success. When a child receives behavior modification therapy, specific behaviors are identified to be extinguished and new behaviors and skills to be learned. A plan for therapy is established and detailed documentation of the child’s responses is maintained. Parents are provided with assignments to implement at home with the child to assist in the therapeutic process.
