Individual Psychotherapy Psychotherapy is a process of assisting individuals to understand their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors and to make changes to improve themselves. Some treatment modalities used in psychotherapy include but are not limited to: cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, brief therapy, motivational interviewing, and insight oriented therapy. Through the initial assessment session, the psychotherapist evaluates which modality may work best for the patient. As treatment continues, the modality of treatment may be changed depending on the progress of the patient. The patient and therapist develop the goals for treatment together and review them to evaluate progress. It is important that the patient be as open and honest as possible. Trusting that the psychotherapist will be non-judgmental and has unconditional positive regard for the patient is imperative. The experience of psychotherapy provides the patient with new life perspectives and directions.
