Children learn best through play and play therapy is an important treatment modality for children. In play therapy, a child is provided an opportunity to explore their world learning life skills necessary to function in the more complex social world. Play therapy is often used with children during the counseling process to help them prevent or resolve emotional and social difficulties. A child does not have the benefit of past life experiences upon which insight and judgment is founded. Play therapy allows a child to interact with others, role play situations, tryout and practice behaviors, and learn interpersonal and communication skills. A safe, confidential, positive, and caring environment is created which allows the child to learn optimally and to receive the affirmation necessary for self-esteem and self-confidence. Play and creativity operate on impulses from outside our awareness, thus play therapy is particularly effective with children who cannot, or do not want to communicate about their problems and challenges. The child is given strategies to cope with difficulties they face in life, which they often cannot change by themselves, and feedback which assists the child in developing understanding upon which they can base their choices and decisions.
